3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes. In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object.
3D printing is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing which is cutting out / hollowing out a piece of metal or plastic with for instance a milling machine.
3D printing enables you to produce complex (functional) shapes using less material than traditional manufacturing methods.

Getting Started with 3D Designing and Printing
During this course students will be introduced to 3D printing and 3D modelling concepts. They will integrate different engineering concepts to bring their ideas to life and have the chance to work like design engineers. Students will be using 3D designing software where they will have to reverse engineer real life models, design their own prototypes, and work on big group projects which they will present.
Learning Objectives
- Define STEM in the classroom to overcome common concerns
- Discuss how the 3D printing process works as well as the various types of 3D printing that are currently used in the manufacturing industry.
- Calculate distance and convert distance into x, y, z coordinate points.
- Explain how a 3D printer uses x, y, z coordinate points to create an object from a CAD model.
- Explain what 3D bioprinting is and the importance of the technology
